Delphine LaLaurie Biography and History of the LaLaurie Mansion

Delphine LaLaurie, born in 1787, was a popular New Orleans socialite of Creole background. Married three times, her neighbors were shocked to learn that she had tortured and abused enslaved men and women in her French Quarter home. Although she escaped an angry mob and the hangmans noose, her home, LaLaurie Mansion, remains one of New Orleans most famous structures. Early Years Born Marie Delphine Macarty in March 1787, young Delphine grew up fairly privileged. Her parents, Louis Barthelemy Macarty and Marie-Jeanne LÉrable, were prominent European Creoles, high up in New Orleans society. Delphines uncle was the governor of two Spanish-American provinces when she was born; later, a cousin would become mayor of the city of New Orleans. At the time of Delphines childhood, New Orleans and much of the rest of Louisiana were under Spanish control, from 1763 to 1801. In 1800 she married her first husband, Don Ramà ³n de Lopez y Angulo, who was a highly ranked officer in Spains royal army. As was common for people in their position, they traveled to Spain and its other territories, but Don Ramà ³n fell ill within a few years and died in Havana, leaving Delphine a young widow with a baby. Delphine had four children with Blanque, but he too died young, and she was a widow again in 1816. Delphine married for a third and final time in 1825. This time, her husband, Dr. Leonard Louis Nicolas LaLaurie, was quite a bit younger than she was, and the two of them moved to a large mansion at 1140 Royal Street, in the heart of New Orleans French Quarter. This lavish home became the site of her violent crimes. Crimes and Accusations There are numerous and varied accounts of Delphine LaLauries treatment of her slaves. What is for certain is that she and her husband did own a number of men and women as property. Although some contemporaries say she never mistreated them in public, and in general was civil to African Americans, it seems as though Delphine had a dark secret. In the early 1830s, rumors began to make their way through the French Quarter, alleging that Delphine—and possibly her husband as well—were mistreating their slaves. While it was common, and legal, for slave masters to physically discipline the men and women they owned, there were certain guidelines laid out to discourage excessive physical cruelty. Laws were in place to maintain a certain standard of upkeep for enslaved peoples, but on at least two occasions, court representatives went to the LaLaurie home with reminders. British social theorist Harriet Martineau was a contemporary of Delphines and wrote in 1836 of Delphines suspected hypocrisy. She related a tale in which a neighbor saw a small child flying across the yard towards the house, and Madame LaLaurie pursuing her, cowhide in hand, until they ended up on the roof. At that, Martineau said, she heard the fall and saw the child taken up, her body bending and limbs hanging as if every bone were broken... at night she saw the body brought out, a shallow hole dug by torchlight, and the body covered over. After this incident, an investigation took place, and charges of unusual cruelty leveled against Delphine. Nine slaves were removed from her home, forfeit. However, Delphine managed to use her familys connections to get them all back to Royal Street. There were also allegations that she beat her two daughters, particularly when they showed any semblance of kindness towards their mothers slaves. The LaLaurie Mansion Flickr Vision / Getty Images In 1834, a fire broke out at the LaLaurie mansion. It began in the kitchen, and when authorities arrived on the scene, they found a 70-year-old black woman chained to the stove. Thats when the truth about Delphines atrocities came out. The cook told the fire marshal that she had set the fire in order to commit suicide, because Delphine kept her chained up all day, and punished her for the slightest infraction. In the process of extinguishing the fire and evacuating the house, bystanders broke down the doors to the LaLaurie slave quarters, and found seven more enslaved people chained to walls, horribly mutilated and tortured. They told investigators they had been there for months. The next day, the New Orleans Bee wrote, Upon entering one of the apartments, the most appalling spectacle met their eyes. Seven slaves more or less horribly mutilated were seen suspended by the neck, with their limbs apparently stretched and torn from one extremity to the other... These slaves were the property of the demon, in the shape of a woman... They had been confined by her for several months in the situation from which they had thus providentially been rescued and had been merely kept in existence to prolong their suffering and to make them taste all that the most refined cruelty could inflict. Martineaus account, written in 1838, indicates that the slaves had been flayed, and wore spiked iron collars to prevent movement of the head. When questioned, Delphines husband told investigators that they needed to just mind their own business. Delphine herself escaped the house, but an angry mob stormed the structure and destroyed it after the discovery of the abused slaves was made public. Following the fire, two of the rescued slaves died from their injuries. In addition, the backyard was excavated and bodies were disinterred. Although one was the child who had fallen from the roof, reports vary as to how many others were buried in the yard. Not much is known about what became of Delphine after the fire. It is suspected that she fled to France, and according to archival records, is believed to have died in Paris in 1849. However, there is a plate on a tomb in New Orleans St. Louis Cemetery 1 that reads Madame Lalaurie, Nee Marie Delphine Maccarthy decedee a Paris le 7 decembre 1842, indicating she in fact died seven years earlier than the French archives would have her. Today, the LaLaurie house is one of New Orleans most famous attractions. In the past decades it has served as a home for wayward boys, a school, an apartment building, and even a furniture store. In 2007, actor Nicolas Cage bought the house; allegedly he never even lived in it. Cage lost the home in foreclosure proceedings two years later. Although many visitors to New Orleans pass the house and view it from the outside, it is now a private residence and tourists are not permitted inside. Relationship Between Obedience And The Law And Gods Blessing

Introduction Throughout our lives obedience to Gods will in all areas of our life can be a struggle. The people of ancient Israel stood as testament to this. However Gods promise to the Israelites is seen in this passage promising his blessings if they stood true to his law. This essay will explore the relationship between obedience to the law and Gods blessing using Jacqueline Grey’s Them, Us Me principle of looking at the bible. Them The book of Deuteronomy was written while Israel was in a time of wandering the wilderness due to disobedience. The 40 years of wandering were almost up and God was re-affirming the covenant and giving them the law that covered all areas of their lives. Right near the end of this massive book of covenant law God promises in Deuteronomy 28 to bless the Israelites if they obeyed whole-heartedly. For ancient Israel, blessing flowed from obedience to God. The blessings are listed in the following verses after the excerpt and they cover all parts of their life. However the fickleness of human strength showed them getting complacent and laidback living in the blessing and disobeying the law. Through this they would spiral down into disobedience, worshipping other gods to try and make up for the lack of Gods blessing but only being cursed more. This would result in them eventually crying out to God and being obedient again. Chicano Essay The Chicano power movement of the 1960s is characterized by Carlos Munoz, jr. as a movement led by the decedents of Mexican Americans who pressed for assimilation. These young people, mostly students, became tired of listening to school rhetoric that stressed patriotism when they were being discriminated against outside the classroom. Unlike their parents, the young people of the Chicano movement did not want to assimilate into mainstream America and lose their identity, they wanted to establish an identity of their own and fight for the civil rights of their people. The Chicano movement was a drastic change from past generations of Mexican American activists. The new Chicano movement was much more vocal of their discontent and led very public demonstrations. The older generation of activists disliked protests and wanted merely to get along with the mainstream society. The older generation of Mexican American activists wanted to associate themselves with their Anglo background of Spa nish decent. The Chicano movement on the other hand, wanted to identify more with their indigenous heritage of Native Americans. This difference divided the older and younger generations of Mexican Americans. The older generation of Mexican Americans saw the U.S., according to Munoz, as democratic, where you need only to work hard and participate in politics to get ahead in society. The younger generation of Chicano Power protesters pointed out that the American Dream that the older generation of activists preached could not be achieved by Mexican Americans no matter how hard they tried, and therefore needed to take more drastic measures to gain equality. Many activists began to shun their alleged white ethnic background and the assimilations ideas. A play, written by Ysidro Ramon Macias called The Ultimate Pendejada criticized the assimilation idea and stressed a Chicano identity which focused more on the indigenous and African roots of Mexican heritage. The Chicano power movement challenged the political and educational institutions of the United States. They gained national spotlight when they created the Viva Kennedy campaign that, according to Munoz, won Kennedy the election. Leaders of prominent Mexican American organizations walked out on a meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico after talks broke down concerning Johnson administrations dealings with the plight of the Mexican Americans. This was the first of many non-violent protests against the government by Mexican leaders. During this protest period, the identity of Mexican Americans as Chicanos came into realization as Luis Valdez told Mexican Americans that the only true identity of the oppressed Mexican people was the identity of the indigenous people of Mexico, the Native Americans. Blowouts by Mexican American youth in the southwest characterized the Chicano power movement in the 1960s. These student protests challenged the public schools to give adequate education to the Mexican American youth. Unfo rtunately, the Chicano movement of the 1960s faded in the mid-1970s and was all but dead in the 1980s. The aggressiveness of the Chicano power movement lost its steam partially due to lack of interest, but also due to FBI intervention of prominent Chicano power movements. J. Edgar Hoover targeted some groups for suspicion of being led by communists. This interference by the FBI led to dissention in the groups leadership and exposed the movements tactics very much in the same fashion that brought down the Black Panther Party. It did spark an interest in Chicano Studies, which has lasted through the years but with many obstacles to overcome. Many college campuses were reluctant to pick up Chicano studies as a program, and encountered many ideological conflicts within its faculty staff. The Chicano movement of the 1960s coincided with the ideas of the Black civil rights movement led in part by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The two movements were not entirely brought together for various reasons. One reason was because the two sides feared each other because they felt that one movement would overshadow the others agenda. When efforts were beginning to surface to bring the two major movements together, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, and few Black leaders expressed any interest to merge the two movements after his death. If unification had been done effectively, the political clout of the movement would have had tremendous effects on American society and politics. The voting power and manpower of the two movements would have gained immediate public attention and forced politicians to acknowledge the ideologies of the people. Since it remained separated, it allowed each side to lose political power and eventually drop into obscurity.
